Hey Rose. Have you, or will you by any chance watch Supernatural? How has your life been lately? :)

Hey! Lots of people recommended Supernatural to me, saying it was “Like Buffy but with hot men” so I watched the first episode and barely got through it. It seemed dominated by really horrible stereotypes of women - either helpless women who needed rescuing or vampish sex fiends. I found it really objectionable to be honest and refused to watch any more. Perhaps the pilot wasn’t indicative of the show as a whole but I had no motivation to find out. I think I prefer Buffy with a female hero - and lots of hot men!

Life is quite difficult actually on a practical level to be honest - for instance I’m getting about five hours sleep a night because of issues with light and noise in my room. However, I’m getting valuable experience and earning a salary and my colleagues are all delightful so it’s a mixed bag anyway!

Life is very busy and exhausting at the moment but I’m glad to see you all!

I’m Rose, I like period dramas, 18th century English literature, dead languages, unpopular ships and I am currently watching Doctor Who and Game of Thrones.

After my queue totally died and I didn’t have time to even come briefly on tumblr for over a week, I’ve restocked it a little bit so you will have a few posts this week!

If I did, then probably Comparative Literature. I’d want to look at something to do with the Romance from ancient times onwards. I’ve studied Greek romances and looked at the development of the romance and novel in the 18th century in Britain but I’d like to expand that. I’d like to go back to the Greek romance but also look at Byzantine romances and Hebrew and Arabic romances and possibly even further afield - I read part of a Chinese romance a few years back which was fascinating, as well as continuing a more thorough examination of the British romance. Probably from a feminist point of view. I’m not sure though. My thoughts are very vague! And I don’t read any Hebrew, Arabic or Chinese so I can foresee a few problems there for a start. :P

Hello! I’m sorry it’s taken me so long to answer. Work has been crazy!

I’m not sure I ever really decided to start writing. It just happened. As a child I made up stories that I realise in retrospect were incredibly complicated - entire family sagas, romances, fantasies, comedies etc. using Playmobil and Barbies. At around age 10/11 I became obsessed with Jane Austen and started thinking about adapting her novels and those of her contemporaries into plays (very simplistically but still) and as I played with toys less I continued to make up stories. I was always making up stories. When I was 11 or 12 and bored on holiday my mother suggested I made up a sequal to Harry Potter to entertain myself. It was around that time that coincidentally I discovered fanfiction on the internet and so I eventually wrote down and published that sequal. I wrote lots and lots as a teenager, mostly pastiching Jane Austen. I wrote Regency plays, diaries of Regency ladies… anything. And my more serious Harry Potter fanfic. As an older teenager I also got into RPing, first on HP boards and then when I was 21 I discovered The London Life a Regency RPG an I guess I never looked back. For several years until I discovered Downton Abbey all my writing was basically on that RPG and I improved so much because of it.

Creative writing is part of lessons in English schools, as far as I know. We did some creative writing in my English lessons at school but I was never very good at it. The kind of things they wanted the kids to write were things I had little interest in: poetry (I’m terrible at poetry) and angsty, introspective pieces filled with lots of adjectives and similes which I find so tedious. I wanted to write historical fiction and satire. I remember when I was about 13 we were a set a piece called “Boredom” and everyone else wrote pretentious waffle about their ~feelings and how hard it was to be a teenager and I wrote a page in which I was a young Regency lady, bored by the stifling life she had to lead as an aristocrat with few freedoms with some kind of ironic twist at the end which I can’t remember now. I got a B+ and “interesting idea”. So I didn’t get on with creative writing in school. I remember being so incredibly fed up with the stuff we were being encouraged to write and the kind of girls who got good marks for it that I wrote what seemed at the time to be a scathing expose of pretentious, angsty, teenage waffle. I never showed it to anyone but I was really proud of it for years. Not sure what I’d think now! I think my resistence to “angst” as a fanfiction genre and indeed in published literature as well stems from this.

As a teacher, although I don’t teach English, I have done some creative writing projects with my students. “Imagine you are a young Roman boy/girl and you are visiting Pompeii for the first time…” That sort of thing. The kinds of work I get varies enormously and marking them is very hard because I’ve received some absolutely wonderful stories which I can’t give very high marks to because they make up too much that isn’t true about Pompeii or don’t include enough facts. Still, I absolutely love reading what they write and I think it’s so important to encourage any sign of interest in creative writing.

Tonight my flatmate informed me that, as I had suspected for a long time, the Year 9 boys are shipping us together. They saw us playing violin & accordion together once and since then believe that this is a sign we are meant to be together. We’re also both single and live in the same flat so obviously it must be true love. “Are you wooing Miss [Silvestria] yet?” they are apparently asking him on a regular basis. (And I believe they are because they’re a charmingly crazy group of articulate boys.)

I think this bunch of 14 year old boys devotedly shipping us because of pointless reasons is just too adorable for words. Of course soon they’ll realise the pain and torture of their ship failing to become canon but whatever, life sucks. :P
